Fossilized Wood and Apatite Pendant Necklace

One-Of-A-Kind

AKA petrified wood, from the Greek root "petro' meaning "rock" or "stone," literally "wood turned into stone," is a type of fossil wood where all organic materials have been replaced with minerals; most often a silicate, such as quartz. Petrification occurs when wood becomes buried and water flowing through the sediment deposits minerals that give the wood a variety of colors.  The intense blue in this piece is most likely from cobalt and/or copper which leave the blue and green color hues.

The pendant is 2 1/4 by 3/4 inches and hangs from a strand of apatite coins separated by African brass beads. Finished with a vermeil trigger lobster claw clasp, and a gold chain.
