Graduated heishi of purple spiny oyster are again contrasted with turquoise for another look of the southwest. Finished with sterling silver curved cones and a hook clasp.
By the way - the word 'heishi' came into our language by way of a misunderstanding. When asked by a North American, a Native American speaking Keres, in Kewa, now known as Santa Domingo Pueblo, identified the shell necklace he was wearing as 'heishi,' which means literally 'shell.' Apparently the shell had been fashioned into the small rounded discs for which his people were justly famed and so the meaning of heishi has narrowed from all shells to just one particular cut of shell because his listener did not completely understand.
